Rate Bowl

Formerly the Insight Bowl and the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, the Rate Bowl was first known as the Copper Bowl from 1989-1996 despite original plans to name it the Cactus Bowl. An annual college football postseason game, the Rate Bowl has been a fixture in Arizona since its inception in 1989. While the game has undergone several name changes due to various sponsorships, reflecting its evolving identity over the years.

The Rate Bowl was initially held at Arizona Stadium in Tucson. In 2000, it moved to Chase Field in Phoenix, home of the MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks, becoming one of the first bowl games to be regularly played in a baseball stadium. After a brief period at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe from 2006 to 2015, the bowl returned to Chase Field, where it continues to be played.

The Rate Bowl features matchups between teams from the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences, making it the only bowl game to showcase this specific pairing. Kansas State is a regular in the Rate Bowl, having made multiple appearances and boasting a 4–1 record in the bowl. In 2006 the Insight Bowl was the home of the biggest comeback in college bowl history as Minnesota led 38-7 in the 3rd quarter before Texas Tech came back to win 44-41.

The Rate Bowl contributes significantly to the local economy by attracting fans nationwide, enhancing tourism, and providing national exposure for the participating teams and the host city of Phoenix. With its rich history and unique venue, the Rate Bowl remains a highlight of the college football postseason, offering fans and teams an exciting and competitive environment each year.
