Gator Bowl

The Gator Bowl is a long-standing Division I FBS bowl game that is played at the conclusion of the regular college football season. The 6th oldest game on the college football bowl schedule and first played in 1946, the Gator Bowl was the first bowl game to be nationally televised. From 1946-1993 the Gator Bowl was played at the Gator Bowl Stadium and is now played at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. Since 2012, the Gator Bowl has been sponsored by TaxSlayer and is officially the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. Previous sponsors include Progressive, Konica Minolta, Toyota, Outback Steakhouse and Mazda.

The Gator Bowl has been the host of many great football games, but may be most well-known for Ohio State coach Woody Hayes striking a Clemson player in the 1978 Gator Bowl that led to Hayes being fired. Despite the physical altercation, Woody Hayes is seen as a hero and legend by the Buckeye faithful.

Historically, the Gator Bowl has featured a team from the SEC more than any other conference. The ACC, Big East, Big 12 and Big Ten have all been regulars in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl over the years for this bowl game that is played most years on New Year’s Day.
