The ReliaQuest Bowl is one of a handful of college football bowl games whose official name is determined by the sponsor. Known as the Hall of Fame Bowl from 1986 to 1995, it was most well-known as the Outback Bowl for 26 years from 1996-2022. Played at the conclusion of the Division I FBS college football season each year. The ReliaQuest Bowl is played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, after being played at Tampa Stadium from 1968-1998. Raymond James Stadium offers a modern setting with state-of-the-art facilities and a seating capacity of over 65,000, making it a fitting venue for this highly anticipated college football event. Tampa’s warm climate and vibrant cultural scene provide fans with an appealing destination to enjoy both the game and the city’s attractions. Classically featuring a SEC vs. Big Ten match-up, the ReliaQuest Bowl has secured its place as one of the premier bowl matchups outside of the College Football Playoff structure. These conferences bring storied rivalries, large fanbases, and high-caliber football to the event, enhancing its appeal to both local spectators and national audiences.
The ReliaQuest Bowl is typically the first game on the bowl schedule each New Year’s Day. With its rich history and commitment to delivering top-tier college football action, the ReliaQuest Bowl remains a celebrated tradition in Tampa and a significant event in the postseason college football calendar. It stands as a testament to the enduring allure of college sports and the passion they inspire among players, fans, and communities.
While the ReliaQuest is the current Tampa-based bowl game, it certainly was not the first. The Cigar Bowl was played in Tampa from 1947-1954 featuring smaller colleges.
The 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl saw Michigan break a 4-game winning streak by the SEC over the Big Ten in this bowl game.
