The Peach Bowl is a prestigious annual college football bowl game held in Atlanta, Georgia. Established in 1968, it has evolved into one of the premier events in college football, often featuring top-ranked teams and serving as a pivotal game in the postseason landscape.
The inaugural Peach Bowl took place on December 30, 1968, at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s on-campus stadium, where Louisiana State University (LSU) defeated Florida State University 31–27. In 1971, the game moved to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, home of the Atlanta Braves, and later to the Georgia Dome in 1992. Since 2017, the game has been hosted at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Atlanta. The bowl was initially created as a fundraiser for the Lions Clubs of Georgia.
Over the years, it has grown significantly in prominence and prestige. In 1997, Chick-fil-A became the title sponsor, and the game was officially known as the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Between 2006 and 2013, it was referred to simply as the Chick-fil-A Bowl, before reverting to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in 2014 to align with the College Football Playoff (CFP) system.
The Peach Bowl is part of the New Year’s Six, a group of major bowl games in the CFP rotation. It periodically hosts national semifinal games, underscoring its importance in determining the national champion. The bowl has featured numerous memorable matchups, including high-scoring affairs and dramatic finishes that have left a lasting impact on college football history.
The 57th annual Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl is scheduled for January 1, 2025, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The 2024 Peach Bowl game is a College Football Playoff quarterfinal, featuring a matchup between the No. 4 seed Arizona State Sun Devils and the No. 5 seed Texas Longhorns.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with a seating capacity of approximately 71,000, serves as the current home for the Peach Bowl. The stadium is also home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United FC, providing a modern and dynamic environment for the game.
