The First Responder Bowl is an annual postseason college football game that honors the dedication and sacrifice of first responders, including police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, and other emergency personnel. Established in 2011, the bowl game is held in the Dallas, Texas area, with the aim of recognizing and celebrating the critical roles these individuals play in ensuring public safety.
Originally known as the TicketCity Bowl and then the Heart of Dallas Bowl, the game was rebranded as the First Responder Bowl in 2018 to specifically honor first responders. The inaugural game under this new designation was notably canceled due to severe weather conditions, marking the first time a bowl game was called off after it had started.
SERVPRO, a company specializing in cleanup and restoration services, has been the title sponsor of the First Responder Bowl since its rebranding. Their involvement underscores a commitment to supporting first responders nationwide.
The game is traditionally played at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, located on the campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in University Park, Texas. This venue provides a central location in the Dallas area, accommodating fans and participants alike. It was originally played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium from 2011-2018.
In the 2023 edition, held on December 26, the Texas State Bobcats secured a 45-21 victory over the Rice Owls. This game was particularly significant for Texas State, marking their first-ever bowl game appearance and victory. Linebacker Brian Holloway was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
Beyond the on-field action, the First Responder Bowl serves as a platform to honor and recognize the bravery and dedication of first responders. Special ceremonies and events are often held in conjunction with the game to pay tribute to these individuals, reinforcing the community’s appreciation for their service.
